Qld Walnut
(Endiandra palmerstonii.)
Description
A large hardwood from Nth Qld. Heartwood has many colours ranging from grey brown to black and pink. Sapwood is pale yellow. The grain is often wavy with a “rowed” grain pattern on quarter sawn boards. The timber smells like a shoe after stepping in what the dog left on the lawn!
Workability
Machines reasonably well but high silica content kills blades dead. Sands and works with hand tolls well. Can be a bit tricky with the interlocked grain at times.
Applications
Fine furniture and veneers.
Availability
Very limited. We usually stock some but it is becoming harder to get.
Hardness
690kg/m3. Moderately hard.
Durability
Not for external use. Don’t waste it outside anyway!
