Red Baltic Pine
Pinus sylvestris
Description
A medium sized softwood found throughout Europe. It has a yellow brown
heartwood and a creamy white sapwood. Tight dark knots are common in this fine
grained timber.
Workability
Works well by hand or machine. The knots can cause some problems when hand
planing. Even so, far superior to Radiata as a cabinet timber.
Applications
General cabinetry, panelling etc. Used as a floor in Europe but in Australia
the flooring is generally White Baltic.
Availability
Usually only 150mm wide due to cupping of the boards. We have had up to 75mm
thick but usually keep only 25 and 38mm thick.
Hardness
Janka 2.6 480kg/m3. Quite soft.
Durability
Not durable.
