  • Tallowwood | Monaro Timber & Joinery

Tallowwood The heartwood of this species ranges in colour from pale to dark yellow-brown, with occasional tinges of olive green. Sapwood is a whitish colour. The texture of tallowwood timber is moderately coarse, generally with interlocked grain. Unusually for a eucalypt species, tallowwood is free of gum veins. Figure is lacking but the timber possesses a distinctive lustre and ‘greasy’ appearance. Tallowwood timber products exhibit exceptional durability in both in-ground and aboveground applications, where life expectancy is greater than 25 and 40 years, respectively. Although tallowwood is highly resistant to decay and will withstand damp and wet conditions quite well, its sapwood is susceptible to lyctid borer (powder post beetle) attack. Recommended uses: Historically, tallowwood has been used for bearings, mallet heads, mauls, wheel spokes, and tool handles. Current engineering applications include wharf and bridge construction (as sawn and round timber), railway sleepers, cross-arms, poles, piles and mining timbers. Construction uses range from unseasoned framing to dressed timber cladding, internal and external flooring, linings and joinery. Tallowwood is also used in fencing, landscaping, and the construction of retaining walls. Decorative uses include outdoor furniture, turnery and joinery. Other applications include boat building, the construction of coaches, carriages and agricultural machinery, and structural plywood.

  • Western Red Cedar | Monaro Timber & Joinery

Western Red Cedar Western red cedar is a large softwood that grows in British Columbia and some of the nearby western states of the USA. Western red cedar will remain dimensionally stable under most weather conditions and is not prone to shrinkage or swelling. Due to its versatility, it can be used for both internal and external applications such as cladding, linings, joinery, windows and roofing shingles. Natural preservatives provide resistance to fungus and insect attack, while its low density offers very good thermal insulation qualities. Western red cedar also delivers impressive acoustic properties. The heartwood ranges from a pale brown through to a richer dark brown. The sapwood is a paler yellowish white colour. It has a fine texture and straight grain with growth rings often visible. A durable, yet soft timber, western red cedar has a good workability. It cuts, machines and glues well and can also be painted, stained and polished. Precautions should be taken when sanding western red cedar as the sawdust can cause irritation for some people. It nails and screws well, however if timber is damp it is corrosive to iron and copper, so hot-dipped galvanised nails/screws should be used where required, and any copper plumbing, fittings or sheathing isolated from contact with the wood. Western red cedar can be brittle along the end grain and sharp cutters are recommended due to its soft nature Recommended uses: Cladding, joinery, windows & door trim Not recommended for: steam bending

  • Blackwood - Tasmanian | Monaro Timber & Joinery

Tasmanian Blackwood It is definitely an ‘appearance timber’, with a heartwood that is a rich golden brown. This is sometimes complimented by reddish streaks or a narrow band of darker colour, indicative of the growth rings. The sapwood is much paler in appearance. Blackwood has a medium and even texture. Its grain can either be straight or have a wavy, fiddleback pattern, which is valued for furniture and veneers. Blackwood is easy to work and nails and glues well. A smooth, polished finish can be achieved, making blackwood ideal for furniture. It is also good for steam bending. If the grain is wavy then this may require the planer angle to be adjusted. It is important that safety precautions are taken when sanding blackwood, as the dust can cause irritations. Recommended uses: decorative veneers, panelling, furniture, joinery and flooring, carving, turning, flooring, boat building and gunstocks Not recommended for: external use

  • Grey Ironbark | Monaro Timber & Joinery

Grey Ironbark It is a particularly hard, strong and durable timber, with a broad range of applications, due to its resistance to lyctid borers and termites. The timber's appearance ranges from reddish to dark brown heartwood. The sapwood is lighter in colour and is 20mm thick on average. Grain is usually tight and straight and no distinctive figure is encountered. Recommended uses: Due to its class 1 strength and durability ratings, grey ironbark is commonly used in engineering applications as a sawn and round timber. It can be specified for wharf and bridge construction, railway sleepers, cross arms, poles, piles and mining timbers. The unseasoned timber is excellent for general house framing, while seasoned and dressed grey ironbark timber is used for cladding, internal and external flooring, linings and joinery. It is also ideal for fencing, landscaping and retaining wall fun fact: Indigenous Australians use it to make spear throwers and boil its bark for treating sores.
